Born and raised in Brampton Ontario, attended High School at Central Peel Secondary School. It was at C.P.S.S. that David met one of the four people that sparked his early interest in music.

The passion for creating and performing great music that his Music Teacher Mr. Tony Van Scherrenburg displayed had a huge influence on him. David maintained a great friendship with Tony until his recent death.

His parents, also part time Musicians, encouraged his musical endeavours as well. His mother, a trained vocalist, and father, second generation in the Brampton Concert Band, were great role models.

In grade twelve he began trumpet lessons with Bramwell Smith II, one of the finest Trumpet soloist that this country has produced. Bram was the Trumpet Soloist in the President's own U.S. Marine Band in Washington in the late fifties.

David joined the Brampton Concert Band in 1975, representing the third generation of his family to play in the band. Both his Father and Grandfather played in the band for over fifty years. In 1979, David  founded the Jazz Mechanics, a sister group of the Concert Band, has been a board member for over twenty five years and still plays with both groups and has held the position of Band President since 1995.

He also co-founded the Thursday Night Concert Series thirteen years ago, Classic Cars and Legendary Stars, both of which are organized and sponsored by the Brampton Downtown Development Corporation.

Along with his wife Cathy, David was the recipient of the 2001 Brampton Arts Council Arts Person of the Year.

Mr. Harmsworth is also the fifth generation in Downtown Brampton's oldest retail business where he has been employed since 1980, Vice Chair of the former Brampton Downtown Business Association, and on the Board of Directors of the new Brampton Downtown Development Corporation.
